Steamtown National Historic Site is a unique unit of the National Park Service dedicated to the history and technology of steam-powered railroad transportation in America, preserving one of the finest collections of steam locomotives and railroad equipment in the United States. Located in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, the site occupies the historic Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad yard and roundhouse complex, a magnificent example of early 20th-century railroad infrastructure, including a fully operational 26-stall roundhouse and turntable. The collection includes more than two dozen steam locomotives and 50 freight and passenger cars representing American steam railroad technology from the 1880s through the 1940s. Visitors can explore the roundhouse, ride the historic transfer table, tour the technology museum and history museum, and watch interpretive programs about the age of steam railroading. Excursion trains depart regularly for scenic roundtrips through the Pocono Mountains and Lackawanna Valley using historic steam and diesel equipment. The site also hosts special excursions to destinations, including Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Steamtown offers an unparalleled educational experience for visitors of all ages interested in the industrial history that shaped modern America.
