The Edmonton, Yukon & Pacific (EY&P) Railway is the authentic heart of Fort Edmonton Park, named after the historic line that famously brought the first rail service to Edmonton’s city limits in 1902. Today, the railway provides a captivating heritage experience using its flagship Locomotive 107, a 1919 Baldwin steam engine that operates during the park’s summer season. Passengers board at the park’s front entrance—near the Indigenous Peoples Experience—and travel the nearly 4-kilometer track through various historical eras, including the 1885 and 1905 streets, eventually arriving at the 1846 Hudson’s Bay Company Fort. Beyond the standard transportation included with general admission, the EY&P serves as a centerpiece for specialized excursions and historical events; it is a highlight of the park’s Self-Guided Field Trips, where students engage with the mechanics of steam travel, and it plays a major role in holiday-themed events like the Family Day festivities in February and the Autumn Railway Open House in mid-October. The railway is also the focus of the ongoing “All Aboard” campaign, a major revitalization project aimed at restoring more vintage rolling stock and expanding the excursion program to include future dining car experiences, ensuring that the legacy of the Edmonton, Yukon & Pacific remains an interactive, living piece of Alberta’s prairie history.
