The Alberta Railway Museum in Edmonton is the largest railway park in Alberta and the third largest in Canada, operated by the Alberta Pioneer Railway Association. Located just northeast of the city at the former CN Pioneer Park Spur, the museum features over 75 historic cars and locomotives spanning the period from 1899 through the 1950s, with an emphasis on equipment from Canadian National Railways, Northern Alberta Railways, and various industrial and short-line operations. The outdoor museum replicates a small terminal complete with a station, water tower, locomotive shops, and car repair facilities — giving visitors an authentic sense of a working railway yard from a bygone era. Visitors can walk through and explore many of the vehicles on site, take rides on vintage passenger trains or speeder cars, and learn about the history of railway maintenance-of-way equipment. The collection includes ex-CNR 4-6-0 No. 1392, various diesel locomotives, passenger coaches, freight cars, and cabooses that bring Alberta’s railway heritage vividly to life. A self-guided tour map helps visitors navigate the extensive grounds, and at least 90 minutes is recommended to take it all in. The museum opens from Victoria Day weekend through Labour Day weekend, operating on summer weekends and holiday Mondays.
