The Whitewater Valley Railroad operates vintage passenger trains through the scenic Whitewater River Valley of southeastern Indiana, offering a beloved 32-mile round-trip excursion between the historic town of Connersville and the small river community of Metamora, a beautifully preserved 19th-century canal town that serves as a living outdoor museum of Indiana’s canal and early railroad era. Vintage diesel locomotives and authentically restored passenger coaches depart Connersville on weekends from May through November, traversing the picturesque Whitewater Valley through hardwood forests, past historic bridges, and along the banks of the Whitewater River. The hour-long layover in Metamora gives passengers time to explore the town’s historic canal locks, operating gristmill, and artisan shops before boarding for the return journey. Metamora is one of Indiana’s most charming historic destinations, centered on a working section of the old Whitewater Canal and the restored Metamora Covered Bridge. The Whitewater Valley Railroad is operated by a nonprofit organization of dedicated volunteers who maintain and operate the historic equipment with genuine expertise and enthusiasm. Fall color season is an especially popular time to ride, when the Whitewater Valley blazes with autumn foliage and the historic canal town hosts its famous Metamora Canal Days festival.
