The Wanamaker, Kempton and Southern Railroad — affectionately known as the Hawk Mountain Line — is a treasured narrow gauge steam excursion railroad in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country of Berks County, operating vintage steam locomotives through the rolling farmland of the Berks County hills near the world-famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary bird migration overlook. This beloved short line, operating on 2-foot narrow gauge track, carries passengers on a 2-mile round-trip excursion through scenic rural Pennsylvania countryside, powered by genuine vintage narrow gauge steam locomotives maintained by a volunteer crew of dedicated railroad preservationists. The Kempton station serves as the departure point, with a small museum of narrow gauge railroad equipment and Pennsylvania railroad artifacts available for inspection. The WK&S is one of a dwindling number of narrow-gauge steam railroads still operating in the eastern United States and offers an exceptionally intimate and authentic steam railroad experience. The surrounding area includes Hawk Mountain Sanctuary — the world’s first refuge for birds of prey — and the Pennsylvania Dutch Country of Lebanon and Berks Counties, making the WK&S an ideal component of a scenic country excursion. The railroad operates on weekend afternoons from April through October.
