The V&T Railway Commission offers a premier “Long Line” heritage experience that bridges the 24-mile gap between the Eastgate Depot in Carson City and the historic boardwalks of Virginia City. Operating primarily from May through October, these 6.25-hour round-trip journeys allow passengers to traverse the rugged Comstock terrain just as miners and pioneers did over 150 years ago. Depending on the schedule, the train is pulled by either a rhythmic, coal-fired vintage steam locomotive or a powerful heritage diesel engine, winding through the scenic Carson River Canyon, past abandoned mine shafts, and through tunnels where wild horses are frequently spotted. Each trip includes a generous 3.5-hour layover in Virginia City, providing ample time to explore the town’s saloons and museums before the return climb. Beyond the standard weekend runs, the Commission also hosts popular seasonal events, including the Toast of the Canyon wine and beer trains during the summer and the immersive Polar Express™ experience during the winter holidays.
