The Green Mountain Railroad and Vermont Railway operate seasonal scenic excursion trains through some of Vermont’s most spectacular landscapes, including the lush Champlain Valley, the rugged Green Mountains, and the pastoral Connecticut River Valley of eastern Vermont. The flagship excursion is the Champlain Valley Flyer, which operates between Middlebury and Burlington along the shore of Lake Champlain, offering panoramic views of the Adirondack Mountains across the lake and the rolling agricultural landscape of Vermont’s most productive farming valley. These excursion trains use the working freight railroad trackage of Vermont Railway, giving passengers a genuine look at active short-line railroad operations while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Green Mountain State. Seasonal foliage excursions in October are particularly popular, as Vermont’s hardwood forests produce some of the most spectacular autumn color displays in North America. Steam excursions have been offered in partnership with locomotive preservation organizations, and the railroad has hosted the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train. Additional excursions depart from White River Junction and Bellows Falls through the scenic Connecticut River Valley corridor. Vermont’s two-railroad system represents one of the few surviving short-line freight operations that also offers regular passenger excursion service in New England.
