The Timber Heritage Association (THA) is a premier heritage railroad organization dedicated to preserving the massive industrial legacy of Northern California’s redwood forests. While they maintain a world-class collection of “iron giants”—including rare Shay and Heisler steam locomotives housed at the historic Samoa Roundhouse—their primary public excursions feature a unique, “open-air” rail experience. Visitors can ride authentic Crew Car Speeders(maintenance-of-way vehicles) along the scenic Eureka and Samoa waterfronts. These narrated excursions offer a rare “low-profile” perspective of the bay’s salt marshes and historic timber mills, crossing the landmark Eureka Slough Bridge. As a cornerstone of the Great Redwood Trail project, THA functions as a living museum, offering a tangible connection to the rugged era when rail and timber were the lifeblood of the Pacific Northwest.
