The Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad has been circling the world’s largest exposed granite dome since April 1962, offering visitors a 25 to 30-minute, 5-mile loop around the base of Stone Mountain in Georgia’s beloved state park east of Atlanta. The railroad uses the original track bed of an 1869 industrial spur built by the Stone Mountain Granite Company, and today operates behind vintage EMD FP7 locomotives built in the 1950s for the Southern Railway — now painted in an elegant Central of Georgia livery. Open-air passenger cars provide unobstructed views of the park’s forests and the massive 825-foot granite dome with its iconic Confederate memorial carving. During the holiday season, the railroad transforms into a magical Polar Express experience with festive carols and seasonal cheer. The railroad operates daily during park hours on select dates throughout the year, with trains departing approximately every 40 to 45 minutes.
