The Stewartstown Railroad in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, is one of the oldest surviving short line railroads in the United States, originally chartered in 1884 and still operating over much of its original 7.5-mile route through the rolling farmland of southern York County. The railroad connects Stewartstown to the former Pennsylvania Railroad main line at New Freedom, and today offers excursion passenger trains through classic Pennsylvania Dutch Country scenery. The Stewartstown’s diminutive but charming wooden equipment and unhurried pace give passengers a genuine taste of early 20th-century small-town railroading, and the line’s long continuity of operation makes it a true living artifact of American railroad history. Excursions operate on select weekends during the spring, summer, and fall.
