The Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan, is home to one of the most famous steam locomotives in American popular culture — No. 1225, the locomotive whose sound and appearance served as the direct model for the animated train in the beloved 2004 film The Polar Express. The SRI operates No. 1225 on seasonal excursions throughout the year from the Owosso depot along the former Pere Marquette Railway corridor, including summer steam excursions, spectacular all-day fall color trains through Michigan’s countryside, and the North Pole Express holiday experience that draws thousands of families each November and December for a recreation of the film’s magical journey to the Village of Ashley. The locomotive itself is one of only two surviving Berkshire-type locomotives in operating condition and remains the centerpiece of a growing collection of steam and diesel motive power at the Owosso facility. A 7.5-inch gauge miniature railroad operates parallel to the Shiawassee River on select days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, offering a delightful experience for younger visitors. The institute’s restoration shop is one of the finest steam locomotive maintenance facilities in the Midwest, maintaining No. 1225 and other historic equipment to federal operating standards. The SRI’s mission of steam locomotive preservation and education makes it one of Michigan’s most significant railroad heritage institutions.
