Ontario’s oldest operating steam heritage railway, the South Simcoe Railway has been bringing history to life in Tottenham since 1992. Set in the scenic Beeton Creek Valley north of Toronto, the railway operates 4-mile round-trip excursions through rolling countryside using authentically restored rolling stock and locomotives. The crown jewel of the collection is Steam Locomotive No. 136, an 1883-built Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works 4-4-0, making it the second-oldest operating steam locomotive in Canada. This very engine appeared in the acclaimed 1970s CBC television series The National Dream and the beloved PBS series Shining Time Station. Passengers travel in fully restored 1920s steel heavyweight coaches while the conductor shares fascinating commentary on the railway’s history and the role of trains in building Canada. Regular excursions run on Sundays and holiday Mondays from the Victoria Day weekend through Thanksgiving, with beloved seasonal events including the Easter Express, Haunted Halloween Adventure, and the magical Santa Claus Express. Entirely volunteer-run, the South Simcoe Railway is a testament to the dedication of its members in preserving an irreplaceable piece of Canadian railway heritage.
