The South Carolina Railroad Museum in Winnsboro, South Carolina, is the state’s dedicated railroad preservation organization, operating excursion trains and maintaining a growing collection of historic South Carolina railroad equipment on the Rockton and Rion Railroad — a remarkably intact 7-mile remnant of a mid-19th century granite quarry railroad that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Rockton and Rion Railroad Historic District. The museum’s excursion trains depart from the Winnsboro depot and traverse this historic corridor through the red clay hills and pine forests of Fairfield County, with open-air excursion cars and enclosed coaches pulled by vintage diesel motive power. The collection includes historic diesel locomotives, passenger cars, freight equipment, and artifacts related to the many railroads that served South Carolina, including the Southern Railway, Seaboard Air Line, Atlantic Coast Line, and South Carolina’s own short lines. Special event trains are a cornerstone of the museum’s annual programming, including Halloween ghost trains, Christmas excursions, and railroad heritage festivals. The museum is particularly important as the only operating heritage railroad in South Carolina, serving as the primary institution for the state’s railroad preservation efforts.
