Sky Railway is one of the most creative and distinctive heritage railroad experiences in the American West — a revival of the historic Santa Fe Southern Railway’s legendary Lamy Line between Santa Fe and the small high-desert village of Lamy, New Mexico. The 18-mile route passes through the stunning Galisteo Basin and follows a rail corridor that has carried some of history’s most remarkable figures, including Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, and Manhattan Project scientists traveling to and from the secret city of Los Alamos. Rescued from dereliction in 2021 by a group of investors including George R. R. Martin, the railroad was dramatically reimagined as a rolling celebration of New Mexico’s art, culture, and history. Two 1920s vintage passenger trains — their exteriors transformed into vibrant moving murals by local artists, including dragon and wolf-themed designs inspired by Martin’s fantastical worlds — host a rotating calendar of themed excursions unlike anything else on rails. Passengers enjoy live entertainment from talented local performers on themed excursions, including the Outlaw Express, Margarita Rail, Sunset Serenade, Suds on the Rails craft beer train, and a romantic Jazz & Stars evening journey. Snacks, local wines, craft beers, and handcrafted cocktails are served onboard while the sweeping New Mexico landscape rolls past. The railroad also features a beautiful 1926 locomotive now restored to full operating condition as a centerpiece of this unique cultural destination.
