The Silver Creek & Stephenson Railroad & Museum, located in Freeport, Illinois, offers a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of steam railroading. Operating on select holiday and autumn weekends, this historic tourist line takes passengers on a 3.4-mile round trip through scenic northwest Illinois farmland, proudly pulled by a rare, turn-of-the-century 1912 Heisler steam locomotive. Passengers travel in an open-air car, a transformed 1889 caboose, or a covered passenger car, creating an immersive experience filled with the authentic sights, sounds, and smells of a working steam engine. The depot grounds also feature a museum and a massive, operating 130-ton Cooper Corliss stationary steam engine, making the excursion a delightful, hands-on step back in time for families and train enthusiasts alike.
