The Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine, is the oldest and largest electric railway museum in the world, housing a stunning collection of over 250 transit vehicles that trace the history of electric street railways from the 1870s through the present day. Founded in 1939 by a small group of enthusiasts determined to save the historic Biddeford and Saco Railroad car No. 31 from the scrapper’s torch, the museum has grown into one of America’s most important transportation history institutions. Visitors can ride restored vintage streetcars and interurban electric cars on a 1.5-mile demonstration loop through the Maine countryside, experiencing the sights, sounds, and sensations of the electric railway era that once linked towns and cities across North America. The museum’s collection spans vehicles from virtually every major American transit city, as well as historic equipment from Canada, Australia, Japan, and Europe. Beautifully restored open-bench summer cars, closed-vestibule city cars, luxury interurban coaches, and experimental transit vehicles are all represented. The on-site restoration shop welcomes visitors to watch active conservation work in progress on the museum’s historic vehicles. Special event excursions, themed rides, and educational programs round out a rich annual calendar of activities at this irreplaceable national treasure located near the Maine coast.
