The Revelstoke Railway Museum in Revelstoke, British Columbia, stands as a proud tribute to the Canadian Pacific Railway workers who drove the Last Spike at nearby Craigellachie in 1885, completing Canada’s first transcontinental railway. Located in the mountain city that grew up around the CPR’s mountain mainline through Rogers Pass, the museum preserves and celebrates the story of the railway’s pivotal role in the history of Revelstoke and British Columbia. The centrepiece of the collection is Canadian Pacific 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive No. 5468, built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1948 and preserved in exceptional condition. The museum also features a restored Business Car No. 4, a magnificent preserved example of the elegant private railway cars used by CPR executives, complete with original furnishings and fittings. Exhibits explore the engineering feats required to build and operate a railway through the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges, the lives of the workers who maintained the line, and the community that grew up around the railway at Revelstoke. The museum is actively engaged in reconciliation work, partnering with Indigenous communities to incorporate First Nations perspectives on the railway’s history and impact. A research archive and gift shop round out the visitor experience at this outstanding mountain railway heritage site.
