The Niles Canyon Railway in the San Francisco Bay Area offers a unique window into California’s railroad heritage, operating vintage electric and steam equipment through the scenic Niles Canyon between Sunol and Niles (in Fremont) on weekends. The canyon itself is a hidden gem — a narrow, winding gorge cut by Alameda Creek through the hills of the Diablo Range — and the railroad follows the route of the original transcontinental railroad’s western approach. The Pacific Locomotive Association operates the railroad as a living museum, running a varied collection of historic equipment including classic interurban cars, steam locomotives, and diesel units. The popular Steam in the Canyon and Christmas Train events draw visitors from throughout the Bay Area.

1 Review on “Niles Canyon Railway”
We have taken this train multiple times and have never been disappointed. The Christmas train with all the lights is definitely the highlight for kids, but we have also been there for Easter and Mother’s Day. We once had the caboose for a private family event, and it was a great opportunity at a reasonable price. It is so easy to get there, and the small town of Niles is a great place to explore.
