The New Orleans St. Charles Avenue Streetcar is the oldest continuously operating streetcar line in the world, rolling along the ancient live-oak canopy of St. Charles Avenue since 1835. Operated by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, this National Historic Landmark carries passengers in vintage 1923 Perley Thomas cars — unchanged in design since they first entered service — on a magnificent 13-mile round trip through the most architecturally splendid corridor in New Orleans. The route passes antebellum mansions of the Garden District, the campuses of Loyola and Tulane universities, the sweeping lawns of Audubon Park, and the Victorian neighborhoods of the Riverbend. These dark green streetcars are among the most photographed transit vehicles in the world and rank among the finest examples of surviving heritage electric transit in North America. The rattling oak-floored cars, open windows, and cane-wicker seats transport passengers to a New Orleans that has changed little since the 1920s. Unlike most heritage railroads, the St. Charles line operates as a functioning daily transit service as well as an irreplaceable historic experience, running from early morning until late at night seven days a week. The 35 surviving historic Perley Thomas cars were designated on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
