The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad and Logging Museum offers a spectacular and historically authentic steam-powered excursion through the old-growth forests and mountain meadows of the foothills of Mount Rainier, one of the most iconic peaks in the American West. Based in Elbe, Washington, the railroad operates over a former logging railroad right-of-way through Mineral and Morton, providing passengers with breathtaking views of the snow-capped summit of 14,411-foot Mount Rainier rising above the surrounding Cascade forest. Vintage steam locomotives from the golden age of Pacific Northwest logging railroading haul open-air and enclosed coaches through Douglas fir and western red cedar forest, past historic logging equipment displays, and across scenic trestles over mountain streams. The on-site Logging Museum documents the extraordinary history of the Pacific Northwest timber industry and its relationship with the railroads that made commercial logging possible in this rugged terrain. The railroad operates on a seasonal schedule from spring through fall, with additional holiday excursion trains. The Elbe depot area includes a remarkable display of vintage steam and diesel locomotives and logging equipment that can be examined up close. The railroad provides one of the most atmospheric and genuine steam railroad experiences in the Pacific Northwest.
