The Mount Hood Railroad — officially the Hood River Railroad — is one of Oregon’s most scenic and historically significant heritage railroads, offering spectacular excursion trips through the breathtaking Hood River Valley with incomparable views of Mount Hood, one of the most photogenic volcanic peaks in the Pacific Northwest. Operating over a 1906 branch line of the Southern Pacific Railroad originally built to serve the orchards and timber operations of the Hood River Valley, the railroad today carries passengers on a 44-mile roundtrip journey from the Columbia River Gorge community of Hood River through cherry and pear orchards in full bloom in spring, spectacular fall foliage in autumn, and evergreen forest with views of the 11,249-foot summit of Mount Hood throughout the year. Vintage diesel locomotives pull restored vintage coaches past some of the most beautiful agricultural scenery in Oregon, with the snow-capped volcano looming above the entire valley. Special excursions include fruit blossom trains in spring, harvest trains in fall, dinner trains, holiday excursions, and the immensely popular Polar Express holiday train. The Hood River Valley is also famous for world-class windsurfing and kiteboarding, fruit stand shopping, and hiking, making a trip on the Mount Hood Railroad an ideal centerpiece for a scenic Columbia Gorge getaway.
