The Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, Illinois, is a dedicated heritage railroad museum and excursion railroad that preserves and operates a collection of diesel and steam locomotives and historic passenger equipment on a 2-mile demonstration loop through the gently rolling farmland of Piatt County, central Illinois. The museum’s operational fleet includes several diesel locomotives representing the motive power that replaced steam on American railroads during the 1950s, as well as vintage passenger coaches, freight cars, and cabooses. Round-trip excursion trains of approximately 30 minutes operate on weekends during the museum’s regular season, and the museum hosts several special events throughout the year, including Thomas the Tank Engine Days, fall harvest trains, and holiday excursions. The museum campus includes an authentic restored depot and a collection of rolling stock available for up-close inspection, making it an educational and family-friendly destination for railroad history in central Illinois. The museum is operated by a nonprofit historical society of dedicated volunteers committed to preserving the heritage of railroading in the Illinois heartland. The Silver Creek and Stephenson Railroad, a narrow-gauge operation, occasionally operates in conjunction with the museum’s events.
