The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers a magnificent excursion through the spectacular Lehigh Gorge State Park in the Carbon County mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, one of the most dramatic river canyon landscapes in the eastern United States. Departing from the historic Jim Thorpe station — formerly the Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal in the beautifully preserved Victorian mountain town of Jim Thorpe — vintage diesel locomotives and restored passenger coaches follow the Lehigh River through 26 miles of towering rock walls, cascading waterfalls, and dense mixed hardwood forest. The Lehigh Gorge is a nationally recognized natural resource and State Park, offering world-class whitewater kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking in addition to the scenic railroad experience. The 2.5-hour round-trip train excursion passes through country accessible only by rail or the Gorge Trail, giving passengers a perspective on this magnificent canyon landscape that no other mode of transportation can provide. Jim Thorpe itself is one of the most spectacularly situated and architecturally preserved towns in Pennsylvania, with a wealth of 19th-century commercial and residential architecture, galleries, restaurants, and outdoor adventure outfitters. Special events include murder mystery trains, fall foliage specials, and holiday excursions.
