The Lake Whatcom Railway in Wickersham, Washington, is a living museum dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Northern Pacific Railway and the golden age of American passenger railroading. Visitors ride in authentic Pullman-built passenger coaches that are more than 100 years old and have remained in continuous railroad service since they were constructed, offering a rare opportunity to experience travel as it was in the early twentieth century. The railway is also home to Northern Pacific steam locomotive No. 1070, the last steam locomotive retired by the Northern Pacific and one that operated in every decade of the twentieth century, making it a significant piece of railroad history. The Lake Whatcom Railway continues this preservation mission through heritage train rides and special-event excursions that have traditionally included seasonal favorites such as Santa Trains, Pumpkin Patch Trains, Easter excursions, and Mother’s Day rides, allowing guests to experience historic rail travel while enjoying the scenic countryside of Whatcom County.
