The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a classic heritage excursion railroad operating through the scenic Hocking Hills region of southeastern Ohio, one of the most naturally beautiful areas in the Midwest. Based in Nelsonville, the railroad operates vintage diesel locomotives and restored passenger coaches on a 14-mile round-trip journey through forested hills, river valleys, and historic rural landscapes along the former Hocking Valley Railway corridor. The railroad is particularly celebrated for its festive holiday programming, including a hugely popular Polar Express train that sells out weeks in advance each holiday season, as well as fall foliage excursions, Easter trains, and summer family rides. Train robbery reenactments add a fun frontier spirit to summer excursions. The railroad is operated by a dedicated corps of volunteers from the Hocking Valley Railway Historical Society, who maintain the equipment and infrastructure while providing an authentic and educational experience for thousands of visitors each year. The Hocking Hills region surrounding the railroad is home to spectacular natural features, including Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave, making a visit to the railroad an ideal complement to outdoor exploration in one of Ohio’s most visited state parks.
