The French Lick Scenic Railway offers a charming and historically rich excursion through the scenic Orange County Hill Country of southern Indiana, operating vintage passenger trains through the rolling limestone hills and hardwood forests of the beautiful French Lick Valley. Departing from the beautifully restored 1907 French Lick Monon depot, diesel-powered vintage coaches make a 20-mile, 2-hour roundtrip journey through the Indiana Railway Museum’s historic right-of-way, traversing the 2,200-foot Burton Tunnel — the longest railroad tunnel in Indiana — and crossing several historic bridges through unspoiled Hoosier countryside. French Lick is famous for its magnificent early 20th-century resort hotels, the French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel — the latter featuring a stunning domed atrium that was once called the Eighth Wonder of the World. The railroad makes an ideal complement to a visit to this remarkably preserved resort district, which is also home to the Patoka Lake area and several state parks. The Indiana Railway Museum, which operates the French Lick Scenic Railway, maintains an impressive collection of diesel locomotives, passenger cars, and freight equipment from railroads that served the region. Special event trains include fall foliage excursions, murder mystery dinners, and holiday rides.
