Exporail, the Canadian Railway Museum, is Canada’s official national railway museum and the largest collection of railway equipment in the country. Located in Saint-Constant, Quebec on Montreal’s south shore, the museum was established in 1961 by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association and designated Canada’s official railway museum by Parliament in 2007. With over 188 pieces of rolling stock and more than 250,000 objects, documents, and artifacts, Exporail offers an unparalleled journey through the history of Canadian rail transportation. The museum’s magnificent Angus Pavilion showcases 50 historic vehicles including massive steam locomotives, heritage passenger cars, and iconic Montreal streetcars. Visitors can climb aboard numerous exhibits, ride the outdoor miniature railway, and enjoy a full circuit on the operating heritage streetcar line that winds through the museum grounds. A heritage passenger railway also operates every Sunday, hauling a vintage train on a former freight spur. With five major permanent exhibition themes — Urban Railways, Serving the Economy, From Atlantic to Pacific, Railway Domination, and Challenges of Railway Transportation — the museum brings Canadian railway history vividly to life for visitors of all ages. The first Sunday of each month offers free admission for Quebec residents under 20.
