The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat offers one of the most unique and memorable heritage railroad experiences in New England, combining a vintage steam train excursion through the Connecticut River Valley with a scenic riverboat cruise on the Connecticut River — America’s first National Heritage River. Departing from the beautifully restored 1892 Essex Station in the historic maritime village of Essex, Connecticut, the steam-powered Valley Railroad carries passengers through 12 miles of unspoiled Connecticut River Valley countryside to Deep River Landing, where a riverboat awaits for a 1.5-hour narrated cruise on the Connecticut River through Selden Neck State Park and the Great Island wildlife area. The roundtrip journey by train and boat takes approximately 2.5 hours and offers exceptional birdwatching opportunities, including eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons nesting in the ancient riverine forest. The 1920 steam locomotive and vintage wooden passenger coaches provide an authentic journey back to the great age of New England rail travel. The railroad also offers diesel-powered fall foliage excursions, holiday trains, and special event rides throughout its operating season from spring through late fall. Essex Village itself is consistently rated one of the most beautiful small towns in America and offers exceptional dining, galleries, and maritime history.
