The East Troy Railroad Museum in East Troy, Wisconsin, is a remarkable surviving example of the electric interurban railway that once linked communities across the upper Midwest, operating vintage electric cars over 3 miles of original 1907 Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company trackage between East Troy and the Mukwonago area. This is one of only a handful of authentic interurban electric railroads still operating in the United States, using genuine vintage electric cars powered through overhead wire systems identical to the original early 20th-century installations. Visitors can ride beautifully restored open-bench summer cars, enclosed city cars, and historic interurban coaches on round-trip excursions to the scenic Elegant Farmer roadside market and orchard, experiencing the genuine sensation of electric railway travel as it was experienced by millions of Midwesterners a century ago. The museum’s collection includes electric equipment from the Milwaukee, North Shore and Milwaukee, and Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee railroads. Special event trains include Thomas the Tank Engine Days, fall color excursions, Halloween Night Rides, and the popular Holiday Lights Night Ride. The East Troy Electric Railroad is operated by a dedicated corps of volunteers who maintain the equipment to federal safety standards and provide an authentic and educational electric railway experience.
