Cass Scenic Railroad

The Cass Scenic Railroad is a true Appalachian heritage line that preserves the early‑20th‑century logging railroading of the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company. Operating out of the company town of Cass, it runs exclusively on the original logging switchbacks and steep mountain grades built for Shay‑powered timber trains. Today, the railroad is managed by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad (DGVR) in partnership with West Virginia State Parks, maintaining its role as a living museum of geared steam locomotives. Cass operates two historic routes: the Whittaker Station line, a shorter climb to a recreated logging camp, and the Bald Knob line, a dramatic ascent to one of the state’s highest summits with sweeping Allegheny views. Every excursion uses restored Shay locomotives, running on the same rugged track built for logging trains over a century ago, making Cass one of the most authentic heritage railroads in North America.
