The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers a relaxed and picturesque excursion through the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the heart of north Georgia, following a historic rail corridor that once served the thriving mining and agricultural communities of Fannin County. Departing from the beautifully restored 1905 Blue Ridge depot, vintage diesel locomotives pull historic passenger coaches on a 26-mile round-trip journey to the small mountain town of McCaysville, Georgia, and its sister city Copperhill, Tennessee — two communities literally divided by a state line running down the main street. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway ride follows the scenic Toccoa River valley through hardwood forests, crossing the river on historic trestles and offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including great blue herons, osprey, and white-tailed deer. Passengers have time to explore both towns before boarding for the return trip. The railroad is particularly popular during the autumn foliage season and for its festive holiday excursions, including the Polar Express. The historic Blue Ridge depot and surrounding downtown area offer shopping, dining, and additional local attractions to complement the train experience.
