The Azalea Sprinter is a charming heritage excursion train operating in the coastal plain of southeast Georgia, departing from the historic depot in Waycross and carrying passengers through the pine flatwoods and wetland landscapes of the Okefenokee region on a scenic round trip through Ware County. The railroad follows a historic Atlantic Coast Line corridor through rural Georgia countryside, offering a relaxed and authentic small-town railroad excursion experience in a region steeped in Southern railroad history. Named for the spectacular azalea blooms that line the route in spring, the Azalea Sprinter offers seasonally themed excursions throughout the year, with spring azalea and dogwood runs being among the most visually spectacular. The train is operated by volunteers and enthusiasts from the Waycross area’s railroad community — Waycross has deep railroad roots as a historic Atlantic Coast Line hub and division point. Special events include holiday excursions and themed trains that celebrate the railroad heritage of this remarkable corner of coastal Georgia. The Azalea Sprinter provides one of the few heritage railroad excursion experiences in a region of the American South with extraordinary natural beauty, including proximity to the vast Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, the largest blackwater swamp in North America.
