Climb aboard the Agawa Canyon Tour Train for one of the most spectacular one-day wilderness rail excursions in North America. Departing from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, this all-day adventure carries passengers 114 miles (183 km) north through the magnificent Canadian Shield wilderness of Algoma — past towering granite rock formations, remote northern lakes and rivers, soaring railway trestles including the breathtaking Montreal River Trestle, and forests alive with colour. The canyon itself, carved over 1.2 billion years ago, can only be reached by train or hiking trail, making this journey truly one-of-a-kind. Once the train arrives at Agawa Canyon Park, passengers have two hours to explore on foot — hiking to cascading waterfalls, including Bridal Veil and Black Beaver Falls, picnicking in the wilderness, or climbing the 300-step Lookout Trail for panoramic canyon views. The tour route passes landscapes immortalized by Canada’s famous Group of Seven painters, who drew inspiration from Algoma’s wild beauty. Operating from August through mid-October, the autumn leaf-peeping season is especially spectacular. A premium Stone Gardner rear observation car is available for an enhanced experience with complimentary meals and drinks.
